Do you know the difference between xiǎng and yào? Let Miracle Mandarin tell you!
Here are some examples:
Wǒ xiǎng qù chāoshì.
I want to go to the supermarket.
Wǒ yào qù chāoshì.
I’m going to the supermarket.
Wǒ yào mǎi yìxiē shuǐguǒ.
I’m going to buy some fruits.
“想去超市” shows that “去超市” is only an idea. I have the plan to go to the supermarket but I am not sure whether I will go to the supermarket.
“要去超市” shows that I have decided to “去超市”. I will go.
So “想” is weaker in tone than “要” and the matter following “想” doesn’t happen 100%. But the matter following “要” is going to happen.
