My name is Riley, and I am a Canadian student at Miracle Mandarin. I came to Shanghai with the specific purpose of studying Chinese. I wanted to come to Shanghai because I felt that it offered a more exciting experience than other cities in China would, an x-factor that would make me more excited to learn and use more and more Chinese. After being in the city for about two months, I couldn’t have been more right in my prediction about the city; it’s fast-paced, it’s exciting, it’s the best China has to offer. There’s always something new happening, there’s always someone new to meet, and that is why I love Shanghai. Of course, the food is another great aspect of the city (and I don’t just mean Chinese food). As a self-proclaimed foodie, I was a little nervous that when I came to China, that I would miss out on some of my favourite foods and cuisines that I had at home. However, finding new favourites was just as easy as discovering where to eat my old favourites. From the different regional cuisines of China, to the different regional cuisines of America, Europe, and South East Asia, it’s pretty easy to find a good meal in Shanghai.
As for my actual progress with Chinese, I’ve made quite a few leaps and bounds from when I began. Previous to studying with Miracle Mandarin, I had studied Chinese at university while getting my Bachelor’s degree. Even though I had put a lot of effort into my studying, I always got caught up on the same simple mistakes. However, since coming to Miracle Mandarin, the intimacy of the lessons has allowed the teachers to get to know what I find difficult, and they take the time to make sure that I understand the material before we move along to more difficult structures and sentence patterns. Additionally, getting to become so close with my classmates has become quite a blessing, because it has allowed me to get over the fear of making mistakes. Now, since the close environment has fostered a sense of trust amongst the classroom, mistakes are less of a thing I fear, and more of a thing I learn from. My only critique of the school would be the social environment outside of the classroom, because it can sometimes be difficult to meet other students in different classes on a daytime-basis. However, the school does have a lot of events that do help to bridge the gap, and I have been able to meet a lot of friends through these events! After my two months of classes, I decided to continue studying Chinese with Miracle Mandarin for another 7 months. I am incredibly excited to see how far my Chinese will come after all that time!
