After entering the society, many friends realized the importance of learning English well. Many companies have certain requirements for mastering English when recruiting talents, which has led to more and more people learning English. Here, the editor Hujiang will share with you some test-taking skills about the BEC English test, which you can use as a reference.
1. Matching questions
focuses on the examinee’s ability to find general and specific information.
Technique: First quickly read seven sentences and find the key words in each sentence. Seven sentences are generally simpler and easier to understand than four texts, so it is recommended to read the seven sentences first.
Read the four texts carefully to see if there are any words that have the same meaning as the keywords in the seven sentences. Remember that most words appearing in the text are synonymous or similar expressions, and words that are exactly the same as those in the previous seven sentences are rare. If you find the same expression, please choose carefully, because it is likely to confuse the candidates.
Remember: to look alike may be the answer, but most situations that look the same are not the answer.
For example, “utlise its current expertise” in the sentence corresponds to “exploit existing skills” in the text. The sentence “Move into a more promising market” corresponds to the text “enter a different market”.
Use each text at least once.
2. Sentence Fill in the Blank Question
focuses on the examinee’s ability to understand the overall meaning of the text, as well as the ability to organize the content in an orderly manner according to the logical relationship of the text.
Technique: Look forward and backward, read the sentences before and after the space, paying special attention to the conjunctions, demonstratives and pronouns in the context. See if the semantics and logic coincide.
At the end, the blank is not filled in. It is recommended to use trial and error, try sentence by sentence, guess the answer based on your own language sense.
3. Reading comprehension questions
focuses on the examinee’s ability to find general and specific information.
This is the question that our Chinese students are best at. We have practiced it from middle school to university. I believe you have all mastered the secret, so I won’t repeat it here.
4. Cloze test
focuses on the analysis of synonyms, collocations, idioms, etc.
Tips: The first sentence is generally not blank, so be sure to read the first sentence carefully. The first sentence is helpful to understand the topic and general idea of the article.
Look forward and backward, read both before and after, start with the analysis of word meaning, word collocation, context, idioms, etc., and choose the answer. Sometimes the words needed to fill in the blanks will appear later.
Review the full text and further check the answers.
5. Correct the wrong question
mainly examines the examinee’s grammatical ability, including tense, voice, subjunctive mood, consistency, non-predicate verb usage, clauses, qualifiers, pronouns, prepositions, etc.
Technique: Candidates only need to pick out the extra words. The extra words are often function words, so when doing the question, focus on articles, prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, adverbs, etc.
According to past experience, about two or three lines of each question are correct. So don’t think that there are extra words in each line, if you can’t find it, just fill in CORRECT.
